Lab-Grown or Mined Diamonds: What's Next for the Industry?

Giving diamond jewelry to a loved one is one of the purest ways to express commitment and eternal love, as the saying goes. Purchasing a stunning diamond ring to commemorate an engagement is an age-old tradition that has withstood the test of time. However, the way and type of diamonds we buy need to be modernized, which is where "Lab Grown" diamonds come in. When compared to their mined counterparts, they are in every way superior.

Before we go any further, it is critical to understand that lab-created diamonds are 100% genuine authentic diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds, as the name implies, are created in laboratories from carefully arranged small diamond seeds that are placed in carbon. The seeds are subjected to extremely high pressure and temperature, simulating the natural method of diamond formation but at an exponentially accelerated rate. They have the same chemical composition and physical properties as mined diamonds and cannot be distinguished by professionals.

As a result, lab-created diamonds are NOT cubic zirconia or other diamond knockoffs. While these imitations may appear to be diamonds, they are fundamentally different, are not as durable and long-lasting as genuine diamonds, and will not withstand professional scrutiny.

Now, let us look at the numerous advantages that lab-grown diamonds have over traditionally mined diamonds in terms of the environment, customers, and, most importantly, human lives.

The environmental effects of diamonds on our planet begin even before they are extracted from the ground; they must first be mined. Regardless of the precautions taken, diamond mining will always hurt the environment. Diamond mining will cause soil erosion, deforestation, and forced relocation of local populations. Natural rivers and streams are further exploited to sustain mining operations, eventually destroying them. Diamond miners have previously rerouted rivers and built dams to expose riverbeds for mining, with disastrous consequences for fish and wildlife. Diamond mining has the potential to devastate entire ecosystems in extreme cases. Not to mention most diamonds come from mines in Africa under the control of warlords and where child exploitation and slavery are rampantly earning the infamous moniker "Blood Diamonds".

Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, have none of these concerns because they are both environmentally friendly and free of child labor because, as the name implies, they are grown in highly regulated labs under the supervision of scientists and engineers. Unlike mined diamonds, which frequently have impurities due to the environment in which they were formed, lab-created diamonds with strictly controlled processes produce brighter and whiter diamonds with almost no defects. Lab-grown diamonds sparkle even more than mined diamonds because the former are typically cut to achieve perfect cuts because there is more rough material to work with. However, because mined diamonds can come in any shape, the latter is cut to get the most weight. Furthermore, colored diamonds produced in laboratories are much more vibrant and uniform than their mined counterparts, thanks to the very precise dosing of trace chemicals.

Creating such high-quality diamonds without incurring all of the environmental and human costs must imply exorbitant prices for the consumer, right? However, buying lab-grown diamond jewelry can save you up to 70% off the price of a comparable mined diamond. Thus, with the same budget, one can easily purchase a larger diamond with a more elaborate design and intricate metalwork, resulting in a proud family heirloom that can be confidently passed down through the generations while retaining all of its emotional and physical value.
